Nancy Allen: Hailed by The New York Times as “a major artist” following her New York recital debut in 1975, Nancy Allen joined the New York Philharmonic in June of 1999 as Principal Harp. She maintains a busy international concert schedule as well as heading the harp departments of The Juilliard School and the Aspen Music Festival and School, and teaching at Stony Brook University. In addition, Allen appears regularly with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. In May 2000 Allen was featured in the Philharmonic’s US Premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra, with Music Director Emeritus Kurt Masur and Principal Flute Robert Langevin. Nancy Allen: Principal harpist of the New York Philharmonic since 1999, Nancy Allen was born in New York City and was a first-prize winner of the 1973 International Harp Competition in Israel. She has toured the U.S. as harp soloist and in duos with flutist Ransom Wilson and has also performed with the English Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and Mostly Mozart Festival. Harpist to Perform at Benefit: HARPS are associated with angels, and the international concert harpist Nancy Allen took her harp closer to heaven when she played a Beethoven song on top of Aspen Mountain in Colorado. "We couldn't fit my harp into the ski lift," she said. "A Snowcat brought it up."Ms. Allen, the most widely recorded American harpist in the United States, has performed as soloist with orchestras worldwide during a 25-year career, which began at 15. She has been a guest artist and faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival since 1978, is head of the harp department at the Juilliard School of Music in Manhattan and is on the faculty of the Yale Graduate School of Music.
